Introduction to Backyard Conservation
This module helps learners understand more about local conservation issues and actions that they can take to help. We use 'backyard conservation' in this module to mean any actions you can take at home or in your local area that can benefit native wildlife and wild places. This module provides information applicable to anywhere in the world, but has a particular focus on Aotearoa New Zealand.

Activity - Reflection on this module and backyard conservation

Completion requirements

This final activity asks you to think about all the things that you have covered as part of this module.

Using this knowledge, consider the changes that you can make to benefit native habitats and wildlife.

Write down the names of some wild animals you would like to help protect.

Thinking about your own lifestyle and all the potential actions from this module. What would you be willing to change to help those animals?

For example:

  • Could you volunteer for a community conservation group?
  • Could you collect litter from beaches?
  • Could you plant more native plants?

How we live our lives and decisions we make often have better, or worse, outcomes for wildlife and wild places.

Reflect on which changes are easy or hard for you to make, then make some final notes on the actions you can take personally to protect wildlife in your own backyard or local area.

Use the downloadable activity sheet to identify changes you can make to help the natural world.

Instructions:

  1. Write down some native animals you would like to help.
  2. Thinking about the potential actions from this module. What would you be willing to change to help those animals?
  3. What things are you more likely to give up?
  4. Give yourself a goal or target for an action that can help wildlife.
  5. Keep a track of how you are progressing with your goal.
  6. Share with others your changes and the animals that you want to protect.
