Introduction to Backyard Conservation
This module helps learners understand more about local conservation issues and actions that they can take to help. We use 'backyard conservation' in this module to mean any actions you can take at home or in your local area that can benefit native wildlife and wild places. This module provides information applicable to anywhere in the world, but has a particular focus on Aotearoa New Zealand.

Activity - Endemic species

Completion requirements

Endemic species are unique to a particular area of the world, such as a country, an island or an ocean.

Find out about an animal that is endemic to New Zealand, or your part of the world.

Try to choose an animal that you do not already know much about. You can use these sources to help you:

You can use the downloadable activity sheet to record your answers.

Remember – not all native species are endemic, as they also live in other parts of the world.

Instructions:

  • Find out about an animal that is endemic to New Zealand (or your part of the world), perhaps one that you don’t know much about. Which animal did you choose?
  • Where is it endemic to? The whole of New Zealand, part of New Zealand, another part of the world?
  • What roles does it play in its ecosystem?
  • What's special about this species? Find a few facts.
  • What is it's conservation status?   Use www.iucnredlist.org or the New Zealand Threat Classification System NZTCS to find this out.
