Introduction to Backyard Conservation
This module helps learners understand more about local conservation issues and actions that they can take to help. We use 'backyard conservation' in this module to mean any actions you can take at home or in your local area that can benefit native wildlife and wild places. This module provides information applicable to anywhere in the world, but has a particular focus on Aotearoa New Zealand.

Activity - Conservation volunteering

Completion requirements

One way that you can support conservation in your local area is by volunteering in an established group. There are many ways that you can contribute, even in small ways.

Instructions:

  • Find out if you have any local wildlife conservation volunteer groups near you.
  • What wildlife or wild places do they aim to protect or restore?
  • Try contacting one to find out what volunteering opportunities they have.
  • Pick an action and try it out.
  • Then share with someone else what it was like.
  • How did it make you feel?

Use the downloadable activity sheet to reflect on actions that you can take within your own community or local area.
